Handspring Puppet Company: The genius puppetry behind War Horse (by TEDtalksDirector)

A great TEDtalk by Adrian Kohler and Basil Jones of the Handspring Puppet Company. At one point they say something to the effect that while actors struggle to die on stage, puppets struggle to live, which is why visible breath is is important in bringing them to life.

Just a handful of minutes behind came mountain biker, who may have won had the course involved any sudden descents through woodland, but on the day arrived late and panting. Mere moments later came a grinning granny-bike dawdler, pulling up at the finish line slowly, but as fresh as a daisy. Once you factor in the time taken to get showered and changed it seems that the tortoise really is faster than the hare. For front door to desk speed, the dawdler took the gong.

That’s my argument: I do have showers available at work, but then I’d need to bring a change of clothes, towel and so forth in, and that’s just a kerfuffle. I also like to smell the roses, take photographs and generally enjoy the view when I commute.

If I live for a hundred years, I will never tire of the brilliance of the introduction to ‘Money’, or fail to be moved by the lyrics of ‘Time’. ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ may be one of the most famous albums in the world, but there’s a reason for that. And even though I have the recent re-master of the album on CD, I still prefer to listen to it on vinyl.

There’s just something about the warmth and analog-y feel of it…

James commented that a photograph I’d posted reminded him of a short animated film he’d seen. This is that film, and it is one of the most moving and beautiful things I’ve seen in a long time. Have a handkerchief ready when you watch it.

I don’t approve of graffiti, but if people must deface public property, I’d prefer them to have a good colour scheme :-)

I detest the music of Britney Spears — particularly this song, because Mr. Bsag knows that he can irritate me by singing the hook in a falsetto register, over and over again…

And yet I love this video. I love sign language full stop, and am entranced by watching signing in the same way that some people are entranced by listening to people speak Italian. I’d really like to know enough ASL to tell whether this is a fairly faithful translation of the lyrics (such as they are) or a parody. Either way, I think that all trashy pop songs should have combo danced/signed videos.
